증명

다음 식

\(\sum_{i = 0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{i!} = e\)

이 성립함을 받아들인다면, 고등학교 수학 수준으로 증명할 수 있다. 증명은 귀류법을 사용한다. (위 급수는 지수함수에 대한 테일러 전개를 이용하여 얻을 수 있다.)

 

결론을 부정하여 자연상수가 유리수라고 하고, 서로소인 두 자연수 \(p\) 와 \(q\) 에 대해 \(\sum_{i = 0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{i!} = \frac{q}{p}\) 라고 하자.
