The zoologists maintain that in a brief period the development of the embryo of an animal recapitulates the history of its ancestors of all geological epochs. It appears that it is the same in the development of the mind. The task of the educator is to make the mind of a child go through what his fathers have experienced, to pass rapidly through certain stages but not to omit any. For this purpose, the history of the science ought to be our guide.
