개요

  • 주어진 원과 같은 넓이를 갖는 정사각형을 작도할 수 있는가의 문제
  • '원적문제'로 불리기도 함
  • 고대 그리스 시기부터 수많은 사람들이 이 문제에 도전했으나 답을 찾아내지 못함
  • 1882년'파이 π는 초월수이다' 라는 사실이 증명되면서 그 불가능성이 완전히 해결됨.


작도의 불가능성 증명

  • 반지름이 1인 원이 주어졌다고 한다면, 그 원의 면적은 \(\pi\)가 됨.
  • 따라서 \(\sqrt{\pi}\) 의 길이를 갖는 선분을 작도할 수 있으면 문제를 해결가능.
  • 그러나 파이는 초월수이므로, \(\sqrt{\pi}\) 역시 대수적수일수 없음.
  • 대수적수가 아니면, 자와 컴파스를 이용하여 작도할 수 없으므로 불가능성 증명.
